Bringing English Stories to Life Through Classroom

From Page to Stage: Bringing English Stories to Life Through Classroom Drama

As part of my final MOOC project, I am helping 3rd‑ and 4th‑grade pupils bring a beloved English story to life through drama and audio production. Over three weeks, these young learners will transform The Very Hungry Caterpillar into a creative, group‑recorded performance, using expressive voices, sound effects and imaginative acting. By rehearsing and recording together, they will build vocabulary, pronunciation and confidence while exploring cultural elements from both Spain and the English‑speaking world. Join us on this journey ‘From Page to Stage’ as we showcase their storytelling talents and celebrate the joy of language learning.

My Introduction

Creative English Teaching

I’m Sameera, a teacher‑in‑training and language assistant in Madrid, completing a Master’s programme in Teaching. This project reflects my approach to teaching English to primary‑school learners through meaningful, student‑centred activities such as storytelling, drama, guided speaking and collaborative tasks. I believe language is best acquired when learners are active and creative, so my lessons encourage movement, communication and risk‑taking in a supportive environment. Here you can follow our process and see how these methods boost motivation, confidence and language skills in young learners.

Project Overview

This three‑week project introduces young learners to English through storytelling, drama and audio production. Working in small groups, our 3rd‑ and 4th‑grade students transform the beloved book The Very Hungry Caterpillar into a vibrant audio performance. They rehearse, adapt and record different parts of the story using expressive voices, sound effects and rhythm. Along the way they expand vocabulary related to nature, food and days of the week, practise pronunciation and grammar, and gain confidence speaking in front of others. Guided by a language assistant, the project emphasises collaboration, creativity and cultural exploration. The final edited recording will be shared on our class website as evidence of their learning journey.

Objectives

Pronunciation, Intonation & Fluency

To help our pupils develop clear, natural‑sounding English, we place a strong emphasis on pronunciation, intonation and fluency. Through choral reading, echoing exercises and playful tongue‑twisters, learners practise articulating sounds accurately, using appropriate stress and rhythm, and speaking at a steady, confident pace.

Vocabulary Building

We expand students’ vocabulary by exploring words connected with nature, food, days of the week and story sequences. Using picture cards, themed games and contextualised storytelling, children discover new words and practise them in meaningful sentences, building a richer lexicon to express themselves.

Storytelling Grammar Patterns

To help our pupils develop clear, natural‑sounding English, we place a strong emphasis on pronunciation, intonation and fluency. Through choral reading, echoing exercises and playful tongue‑twisters, learners practise articulating sounds accurately, using appropriate stress and rhythm, and speaking at a steady, confident pace.

Confidence in Speaking

A key aim of our project is to build confidence in speaking English aloud. Group performances, role‑plays and audio recordings give students repeated opportunities to share their voices in a supportive environment, helping them overcome shyness and take pride in their progress.
